It’s another morning in the workshop, and Brendan from BM Refrigeration Services is spending some quality time with a Brema ice machine. As he listens to water freeze — a 20-minute cycle — he reflects on one of the most overlooked but critical components of any ice machine setup: the water filter.
The Brema unit in question is a solid machine, known for its electromechanical reliability. It doesn’t rely on complex electronics to measure ice thickness, which makes it a dependable choice in a range of water conditions — from hard to soft. But even the best machines can’t perform without clean water, and that’s where filters come in.
Here’s the catch:
No manufacturer will cover warranty claims if there’s no water filter in place. It’s a non-negotiable. Without filtration, minerals, sediment, and other impurities can build up, causing performance issues or even damage.
In this particular case, the client’s machine had stopped producing ice. There were no faults with the unit itself, meaning the issue likely stems from water quality — and unfortunately, that puts warranty coverage out of reach.
The client is based in a regional area using a two-stage water system, possibly tank or bore water. Unlike urban mains water, country water systems often lack the consistency and purity needed for delicate refrigeration equipment.
Brendan’s recommendation?
Go beyond just filtering the line to the ice machine. A whole-building water filtration system — with pre-filters, post-filters, or even a reverse osmosis unit — can make a world of difference, not just for the ice machine but for all appliances relying on clean water.
After a bit of patience, the machine kicks into gear and starts dropping ice. That satisfying crack of frozen water is a good sign — but a proper water filter system would’ve helped prevent the issue in the first place.
