Commercial Display Cabinet Not Working in Sydney — Faulty Switch Found and Full Service Completed in One Visit

An intermittent fault on a commercial display cabinet can be one of the more frustrating problems to deal with. The unit works sometimes. Then it does not. And there is no obvious reason why.

This is exactly what we were called out to fix recently — and what we found when we looked deeper than the immediate fault.

What We Found — A Faulty On and Off Switch

Systematic testing through the electrical system identified the cause. The on and off switch was failing intermittently.

It was not failing completely — it was making contact sometimes and not others. When the switch made contact, the unit ran normally. When it did not, the unit simply stopped with no obvious external sign of why.

This kind of intermittent electrical fault is easy to overlook or misdiagnose. It can look like a control board issue, a compressor problem, or even a refrigerant fault — until the electrical components are tested properly.

The Fix — Switch Replaced on the Same Visit

Once the faulty switch was confirmed, we replaced it with a correctly specified unit that we had on the service van.

Carrying spare parts for common electrical faults — switches, relays, capacitors, and control components — is a deliberate part of how we approach service visits. If a fault is diagnosed on site but the part is not available, the client is left waiting for a return visit with a unit that may or may not work in the meantime.

Having the right part available at the time of diagnosis means the fault is fixed in a single visit.

We tested the unit through multiple operating cycles after the replacement to confirm the fault was fully resolved and the cabinet was running consistently before we signed off.

Why We Also Carried Out a Full Service

The switch fault was fixed. But the age and service history of the unit made it worth looking further.

Display cabinets in commercial food service and retail environments run continuously. Over time — particularly when professional servicing has not been carried out regularly — the condenser and internal components accumulate the same kind of buildup that affects any commercial refrigeration equipment.

On an older unit, that accumulation can be significant. The system may have been running with reduced efficiency for so long that the operator has simply come to accept it as normal.

We carried out a full service on the same visit as the switch repair.

What the Full Service Involved

The main focus of the service was the condenser.

We applied a professional coil cleaner to the condenser, allowed it to penetrate through the fin depth, flushed it with a water pump, and rinsed it down thoroughly.

The amount of debris removed from the coil was a clear indication of how much efficiency had been lost — and how much had now been restored.

Here is what the full service achieved on top of the switch repair:

  • Condenser cleaned and restored to full working condition
  • Energy consumption of the unit reduced
  • Thermal strain on the compressor reduced
  • Service life of the overall system extended
  • Unit returned to the client in a properly maintained condition — not just with the immediate fault fixed

Why Repairing Without Servicing Is Not Enough on an Older Unit

Replacing the switch and leaving would have given the client a unit that was electrically working again. But it would still have been mechanically compromised.

A fouled condenser forces the compressor to run hotter and harder than it should. Every day it operates in that condition, it is wearing out faster than it needs to. Fixing the electrical fault without addressing the mechanical condition just means the repaired unit goes back to operating in a degraded state.

For older commercial refrigeration equipment that has not been properly serviced in some time, a repair visit is the natural opportunity to assess the full system and carry out any overdue maintenance at the same time. It saves the client an additional callout and makes sure the repaired unit is actually in good condition when it goes back into service.

One More Thing Worth Knowing About Intermittent Faults

Intermittent electrical faults in commercial refrigeration tend to get worse over time, not better.

A switch that is failing intermittently today will eventually fail completely. The unit will stop working entirely — usually at the worst possible time. Getting an intermittent fault diagnosed and fixed while the unit is still partially operational is always the better outcome than waiting for a complete failure.

Do not assume an intermittent fault will sort itself out. It almost never does.

Frequently Asked Questions — Display Cabinet Faults and Servicing

Intermittent faults are most commonly caused by electrical components that are failing but have not failed completely yet. Common culprits include the on and off switch, a relay on the control board, a failing capacitor, or a loose electrical connection. These components can make and break contact unpredictably, which causes the unit to operate normally at times and appear dead at others.

Methodical testing through the electrical system is the only reliable way. We work through each component systematically — checking switches, relays, capacitors, and control board components — until the failing part is identified. This takes longer than diagnosing an obvious fault but it finds the actual cause rather than guessing.

A repair on an older unit that has not been properly serviced fixes the fault that was reported but leaves the underlying mechanical condition in place. On this job, the condenser was heavily fouled — the unit was using more electricity than it needed to and the compressor was under unnecessary strain. Addressing both in the same visit restored the unit to a properly maintained condition and saved the client an additional callout.

Signs include the unit running more than usual, higher power bills, difficulty maintaining the set temperature, or visible dust around the condenser grille. If the unit has not been professionally serviced in more than six months, the condenser is worth checking regardless of how the unit appears to be performing.

Almost never. Electrical components that are starting to fail tend to deteriorate over time. An intermittent fault that is not addressed will eventually become a complete failure — usually at the worst possible time. Getting it diagnosed and fixed while the unit is still partially working is always the better outcome.
