What We Did — Full Unit Replacement

We removed the old unit and replaced it with a new one that had a slightly larger cooling capacity. This was a deliberate choice. A unit with a little more capacity than the minimum required gives the system more headroom to maintain safe temperatures consistently, even during busy periods when the display is opened and closed frequently.

Once the new unit was in position, we completed:

  • Minor re-piping to connect the new unit correctly to the existing setup
  • Rewiring to connect the electrical supply to the new unit
  • Full system evacuation to 500 microns before introducing refrigerant

Evacuating the system to 500 microns is an important step that removes moisture and non-condensable gases from the refrigerant circuit before the system is charged. Skipping this step or not reaching the correct vacuum level can cause ongoing problems with the refrigerant system.

The Result — Stable at 5 Degrees Within Minutes

Once the system was evacuated and a full gas charge was introduced, the display unit pulled down to 5 degrees Celsius within minutes of startup.

The client had a fully operational, food-safe display unit back in service the same day. Stock was no longer at risk and the unit was compliant with food safety temperature requirements from the moment it was handed back.

Why Acting Quickly on a Failing Display Unit Matters
