Compressor Terminal Plate Gasket Failure — How We Saved a Semi-Hermetic Compressor in Sydney
Small parts can cause big problems in commercial refrigeration. This job is a good example of that.
During a routine service on a four-cylinder semi-hermetic compressor, we found a small moisture spot inside the terminal plate. What looked like a minor issue turned out to be a serious problem that could have destroyed the compressor entirely.

What We Found — Moisture Inside the Terminal Plate
Moisture inside a terminal plate is not normal. It is a warning sign that the gasket — the seal around the terminal plate — has failed or is failing. In this case, the compressor had also been flooding back. This means liquid refrigerant and oil had been returning to the compressor in liquid form rather than as gas. This puts extra pressure on the internal components and weakens seals over time.

What the Gasket Does and Why It Matters
The terminal plate gasket is a seal that sits around the terminal plate of the compressor. It has three important jobs:
When this gasket fails, all three of those protections are lost. Moisture can track across the motor windings, which leads to electrical faults, short circuits, and eventually a burned-out motor.
What the Old Gasket Looked Like
When we removed the terminal plate, we could see the gasket had degraded badly. It was flat, hard, and no longer forming a proper seal. The raised ridges that are designed to create a tight seal had worn completely flat.

A gasket in that condition cannot seal anything properly. It was only a matter of time before a serious fault occurred.
How the Variable Speed Drive Helped Us Catch It
The compressor on this system was connected to a Variable Speed Drive, also known as a VSD.
A VSD monitors the electrical performance of the compressor it is connected to. In this case, it was picking up on subtle electrical leakage caused by moisture tracking across the motor windings. This kind of early signal is easy to miss without the right equipment.
The VSD flag was part of what prompted a closer look during the service. Without it, the fault may not have been noticed until the compressor failed completely.
What We Found Inside the Motor
Once the terminal plate was removed, we could see the motor windings directly. Moisture had already begun spreading along the insulation inside the motor.

Catching it at this stage meant we could carry out a targeted repair rather than replace the entire compressor. A full compressor replacement on a unit like this would have cost significantly more than the repair we were able to do.

Regular servicing catches issues like this while they are still manageable. A new gasket costs very little. A new compressor costs a great deal more.
